• Make sure the dryer is properly installed and gas and electric lines meet current safety standards
• Never leave home or go to sleep when the dryer is running
• Do not overload the dryer – Overloading can cause stress on the appliance and reduce performance and efficiency
• Read the owner’s manual for safe operation instructions and keep it handy for troubleshooting help
• Schedule professional dryer vent installation (http://www.dryerventinstallation.net/) – Replace faulty dryer ducts made of vinyl, plastic or flexible foil with rigid metal dryer vent material
• Clean the dryer duct often using specialized brushes available at the local hardware store
• Better yet, have a qualified dryer vent service technician provide a dryer vent inspection and cleaning annually
• Keep the area around the dryer clean and clutter-free of combustible items like boxes, cleaning supplies and flammable substances
• Avoid drying items that have been soaked with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, motor oil, cooking oils or other types of combustible liquids as the heat from the dryer could cause them to ignite

Heat and air flow are the two main ingredients of a well-functioning clothes dryer. Heat is produced by electricity or natural gas. The dryer vent system is responsible for producing air flow. Without air flow, the dryer labors harder to do its job, consuming more energy and overworking to the point of breaking down or causing a fire.

Clothes dryers must eliminate the moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. The moisture is held in the warm air produced in the dryer as humidity and is normally expelled to the outdoors through the dryer vent. If this air cannot be adequately removed, poor dryer performance will be the result.

The moisture can also condense into pools of water in the dryer vent, eventually leaking out. Any moisture accumulated inside the dryer vent system is a sign of poor venting which should be looked into by the Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard.

YOUR DRYER VENTS ARE ALL-IMPORTANT: There are many things that contribute to the proper operation of a clothes dryer. The dryer vent system is perhaps the most critical. Below we describe a dryer's functions and how the dryer vent system plays a part.

MOISTURE: One of the most important functions of a dryer is the elimination of moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. This moisture is held in the warm air produced by the dryer as humidity, and is normally expelled to the outdoors through the dryer's vent. If this air can not be adequately removed, poor drying will result.

This moisture can also condense into pools of water in the dryer vent, eventually leaking out. Any moisture accumulation inside the dryer ducting is a sign of poor venting which should be looked into. Schedule the Dryer Vent Wizard for a dryer vent cleaning and inspection.

HEAT: The heat is another important function of a dryer. Many current dryer models have a 'one-time', non-resettable, thermal fuse or safety. These safety devices will open should the dryer's vent not be installed properly, or if it becomes restricted. Once this happens, the dryer will no longer heat and will require the part to be replaced to correct the condition.

On some dryer designs (usually gas) failure of one of these thermal fuses will totally stop the dryer operation altogether.

On older models without one of these thermal safeties, poor venting can cause the dryer to cycle on its safety thermostat, instead of the temperature control thermostat. This usually contributes to poor drying and can cause overheating. On some models, the malfunctioning of the timer operation affects some cycles.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Get the Lint Out!

Don’t Let Your Dryer Start a Fire! Let the Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard Keep Your Home Safe and Sound

Dryer Vent Cleaning is Important! Most people have their furnaces cleaned regularly; however, very few people realize the importance of dryer vent cleaning service. According to the National Fire Protection Association over 15,000 dryer fires are reported each year with failure to clean dryer vents being the number one cause. Believe it or not, your clothes dryer is more likely to cause a fire than your furnace or stove! Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard recommends annual dryer vent inspections and regular dryer vent cleaning service.

Dryer Vent Cleaning to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Besides being a fire hazard, poorly vented gas dryers can be a carbon monoxide hazard. The dryer vent system on gas dryers removes gas by-products, like carbon monoxide from your home. Let the Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard perform a complete inspection of your dryer vent system to provide peace of mind that your dryer is operating safely and efficiently.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Reduces Energy Bills

When a dryer vent system is clogged with lint, air flow is restricted, so the dryer works harder and uses more energy. This creates higher utility bills and a greater chance of the appliance breaking down. Appliance repairs and/or replacement can be expensive. You can prolong the life of your clothes dryer with proper dryer vent cleaning and maintenance. The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard provides professional dryer vent services for homes and businesses in his community.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Prevents Fires

A dryer fire is caused by lint build-up which restricts airflow and leads to overheating. Dryers produce a lot of lint and simply cleaning the lint screen is not enough. Though the lint filter catches most of the lint, some will escape into the dryer cabinet and the dryer vent system. The dryer ducts remove lint and moisture from your clothes; the moist lint rarely makes it to the vent outside of your home. It can stick to the sides of the ducts where it builds up and eventually dries to a hard paste. This hard paste attracts more sticky lint, eventually creating a blockage which will cause a fire.

Dryer Vent Inspections and UL Safety Standards

Underwriters Laboratories is an independent product safety certification organization that has been testing products for safety for over a century. The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard will inspect your dryer vent system to be sure it meets UL Safety standards in your community.

Dryer Vent Wizard Recommends Shorter Dryer Ducts

In the past most clothes dryers were in the basement, on an outside wall, with a relatively short, straight vent to the outdoors. Today many newer homes are built with the laundry area located away from an outside wall, near bedrooms on the second floor, where much laundry originates. Though convenient, this means dryer vents are much longer and contain some elbows and bends where lint can accumulate. They’re also harder to reach therefore more difficult to keep cleaned. The ideal dryer vent system is short and straight. The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard can make sure these systems operate safely and efficiently and he has special tools for cleaning the most difficult areas to access.

Dryer Vent Wizard Uses Rigid Venting Material, not Vinyl

Dryer ducts should be made of rigid metal, not the flexible foil or vinyl type that was used in the old days. The flexible vinyl type of tubing crushes easily and restricts air-flow. Dryer Vent Wizard professionally installs rigid metal dryer vent systems in homes and commercial buildings.

Dryer Vent Inspection to Ensure Proper Dryer Vent Installation

The Dryer Vent Inspection Wizard does not use sheet metal screws when attaching multiple sections of vent pipe together. They use foil tape instead to eliminate protuberances that cause obstructions where lint can accumulate, eventually leading to a restriction which hampers dryer vent cleaning and allows lint to build up.

Wash the Lint Screen to Remove Residue Build-up

The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard says the dryer vent screen should be washed thoroughly with warm soapy water every few months to remove residue build up caused by dryer sheets. It is actually possible for the lint screen to have so much build-up on it that it will hold water! This definitely restricts air flow and causes the dryer to take more than one cycle to properly dry a load of clothes.

Bugs, Mice, Birds and Critters

If you have mice in your house, you have probably called exterminators or tried your own critter traps to get rid of the pests. But this is just a temporary solution until more critters come in. The only effective way to get rid of them for good is to stop them from getting into your home in the first place. The one major path of entry that mice have into your home is the dryer vent.

Birds have been known to build nests in dryer vents which prevent lint from escaping. Bees, wasps and hornets nests have also been found in dryer vents. The Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard recommends annual dryer vent cleaning and regular inspections to be sure the dryer vent system is free of clogs.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Tips from the Wizard

  • Make sure your dryer vent system is up to city, state and manufacturer’s codes
  • Replace plastic or foil vent with solid metal material
  • Keep the lint screen clean; check before and after each load
  • Wash lint screens with soap and water every few months to remove residue from fabric softener sheets
  • Have professional dryer vent cleaning done annually
  • Don't keep combustibles like chemical cleaning products or chemical laden rags near your clothes dryer
  • Don't leave the house or go to sleep with your dryer running
  • Check the outside vent cover to make sure it's not blocked or damaged

Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard Warning Signs to Watch for

  • The dryer takes more than one cycle to get a load dry
  • No lint visible on lint screen
  • Dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle
  • Clothes have moldy smell after dry cycle
  • Clothes are very hot after a dry cycle

Dryer Vent Wizard is the dryer vent cleaning, installation and repair expert to call for all dryer vent services. The service call is very little compared to the loss of your home or the lives of you and your family if you should experience a clothes dryer fire.

Dryer Vent Installation A Guide from the Wizard

Dryer vent installation, though simple in theory, can be a serious fire hazard if it is not done right. Proper dryer vent installation requires understanding the purpose and function of your dryer vent system. Forced heat produced by natural gas or electricity is blown on your laundry as it tumbles in your dryer. This moist heat must escape through the dryer exhaust ducts to the dryer vent outdoors.

An improperly installed dryer vent system can restrict airflow and cause your dryer to labor excessively as it does its job. A poorly installed dryer vent system can lead to substantially higher energy bills and pre-mature death of your clothes dryer. Here are some tips from the Dryer Vent Installation Wizard.

Dryer Vent Installation Tips from the Wizard

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard only installs dryer vents of rigid material about 4 inches in diameter. The old flexible foil or vinyl tubing do not meet current dryer vent installation safety standards.

Dryer lint will build up in the dryer vent system over time. To reduce lint build-up, the Dryer Vent Installation Wizard makes sure the dryer duct is smooth inside. He joins sections of ductwork with foil tape, not screws that protrude to the inside which can catch and trap lint.

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard says the law requires all clothes dryers to be vented to the outdoors. If you have a gas dryer, the dryer vent system is responsible for removing gas by-products, like carbon monoxide, from your home.

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard says the dryer vent tube should be installed with as few turns as possible and the shorter the run, the better. The longer the dryer duct, the harder the dryer works to force the hot air to the vent outside.

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard says to use straps to support the duct so that there are no low points for lint to collect and build up. Use a level to set horizontal sections with a slight fall to prevent moisture from collecting.

Dryer Vent Installation: New Home Problems and Solutions

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard is especially concerned with dryer vent systems in some newer homes, like those built with convenience for the homeowner in mind, without enough consideration to dryer vent safety and efficiency. The laundry area is now located near the center of the home, upstairs between bedrooms where most dirty laundry originates. Now the distance from the dryer to the vent outside is considerably longer. Proper dryer vent installation is most critical for this type of system.

According to the Dryer Vent Installation Wizard it is more difficult to push air through a longer vent because the air inside has weight and volume. The average clothes dryer can handle venting through about 20 feet of venting pipe before having any difficulty. The motor lacks the strength needed to push the air much further as the weight increases and the flow slows down.

When the air flow is too slow moisture is allowed to accumulate in the venting. When the dryer ducts are moist, lint will stick and accumulate, building up and restricting air flow.

When lint is allowed too build up and block the air duct the system overheats. The normal drum temperature of 175 degrees can quickly increase to 300 degrees or higher, eventually becoming hot enough to ignite.

The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard is familiar with a variety of dryer vent configurations and he knows how to make all dryer vent systems safe and efficient.

Dryer Vent Installation: Do it Right to Prevent Problems

Proper dryer vent installation and following up with annual dryer vent cleaning will save you from many costly problems down the road, including:

  • Up to $300 per year in additional utility expenses due to reduced air-flow and longer drying time
  • Expensive dryer repair services due to overworked dryer
  • Mold and mildew damage to your home; contaminating the air you breathe
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning due to improper venting of a gas appliance
  • Dryer fire, causing extensive home damage, loss of home, loss of lives

Are you sure your dryer vent system is properly installed? If you have any doubts, you need to call The Dryer Vent Installation Wizard for a complete inspection. The fee for this type of service quickly pays for itself as it eliminates all the problems listed above.

News about the Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard:

Hidden Dryer Hazards Pose Risk For Homes

Joe Shortsleeve Reporting (WBZ)

COHASSET

It's a potential danger that could cost you your home, or even your life.

Every year there are an estimated 25,000 fires started by clothes dryers, causing death, injuries and damage. It happened to the Doonan family of Cohasset about a year ago. The Doonans lost their house and their beloved dog.
"It was from lint that gathered in the hose, and it somehow caught fire," says Karin Doonan.

They're still rebuilding. "The house had to come down and all our belongings were destroyed," she says.

Kevin Wilson of Home Care Services in Plymouth knows the dangers of dryer fires. He cleans ducts and routinely finds dryer ducts congested with lint, which is usually the culprit. He showed us how flammable lint can be by putting a small amount in a typical flexible foil duct that many people use on their dryers.

"You can take a match and just touch it and it'll go poof!" he says.

That's what happened. The flames burned through the ductwork. You could see how easily a fire could spread that way.

How can you protect your family and your home? Cleaning the lint trap is only the start. You have to do a lot more to be sure the system doesn't clog up with lint, overheat and catch fire.

Start by checking the slot where the lint trap goes. Be sure to vacuum it. At least once a year pull your dryer out and vacuum the heat vents in the back. Then check the tube you'll find on the back at the bottom of the dryer which connects with the heating element, and clean that out, too.

"This is where a lot of the fires do happen," says Kevin Wilson.

Then the toughest part: cleaning the ductwork itself. You may need a professional if you don't have good access. When Kevin loosened up the insides of the ductwork on our test house and we turned the dryer on, a large amount of lint blew out.

You also need the right ducts. If you have the old style made of plastic or vinyl consider replacing them because they can catch fire. The accordion shape can also be a problem since it can trap lint. Even the foil material can burn through.

Buy metal ducts. The best are smooth and straight. Then use semi-rigid aluminum for any turns you need to make.
Karin Doonan will soon be in her rebuilt home, and is going to be extra cautious. "I probably will have somebody come in at least twice a year. I don't want to do this again," she says.

Chris Thomas - Dryer Vent Wizard Franchisee

A New Service in Littleton, Dryer Vent Wizard, helps rid homes of this safety hazard.

Handyman and Littleton resident Chris Thomas purchased the Dryer Vent Wizard franchise in April 2006; before that, he owned A Very Handyman for about four years. While Thomas enjoyed his work, he didn't see any growth potential. He started to keep his eyes open for other opportunities, and then the Dryer Vent Wizard came along.

Dave Lavalle, who operated a handyman franchise previously, started the company. Lavelle noticed he was getting a large number of calls about dryer vents. He quickly learned that no one else was offering this service and started Dryer Vent Wizard last spring.

After just 10 months, there are more than 40 Dryer Vent Wizard franchises in the U.S., and it is one of the fastest growing service franchises in the county. Thomas currently owns the only Dry Vent Wizard franchise in Colorado and has seen a steady increase in business.

"With my handyman background, this franchise is a natural fit for me," Thomas said. "I had no idea how hazardous the household dryer is."

Out of every 100 dryers he sees, only one doesn't need service. The biggest safety hazard is the vent that runs from the back of the dryer to the outside. If the vent is made from plastic or foil, the potential risk goes up. As the vent ages and begins to sag, it curves and leaves a place for lint to build up, creating a highly flammable clog that can ignite at any moment with the dryer running.

Thomas looks at 10 factors when inspecting a dryer for safety. In addition to checking the vents, he also checks airflow and looks at the amount of lint on the floor behind the dryer.

"If a potential customer calls me and says that it takes two to three cycles to get their clothes to dry, that's a big red flag," says Thomas. "Having your dryer checked for safety is something that every homeowner should do; it's just one less thing for people to worry about."

Recently Thomas visited Children's World Daycare in Littleton. Upon inspection, he not only found a large amount of lint clogging the dryer, but he also found a dead bird blocking the vent.

"Keeping our day care's dryer is a top priority for Children's World," said Tanya Coulter, the center's director. "We're appreciative of the generosity and knowledge that the Dryer Vent Wizard provided us."

Thomas provided his service to Children's World for free — it's the policy of Dry Vent Wizard franchises to provide free service to day-care centers and fire departments.

Thomas will also check washing machine hoses. According to Thomas, most people have rubber hoses, and this is just an accident waiting to happen. If your hoses are more than three years old and are rubber, it's recommended they be replaced.

"Washing machine hosing is under constant pressure," he said. "It's not a question of if it will break, but when."
Thomas, 42, enjoys what he does and makes service the focal point of his business, "I'm not a salesperson," says Thomas. "I go to someone's house to solve problems and help make their home safe."

The basic service call to have Thomas inspect your dryer is $39. What he finds will determine the service he performs and the cost. All of his work is guaranteed, and he does offer plans toward future service.

"I enjoy making a difference and knowing that I'm helping to make people's homes safe," he said.

By RANDYL DRUMMER
Special to The Press-Enterprise

What's new: Dryer Vent Wizard opened in Murrieta in 2006. The operation specializes in cleaning out those often-overlooked crevices.

What it is: Dryer Vent Wizard is a franchise that cleans out, repairs and installs dryer vents and chutes for homes and businesses.

"If your clothes dryer takes longer than one cycle to dry a load, then you may have a fire hazard in your dryer vent," said owner Steve Gors, citing statistics by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission asserting that 15,500 fires a year are caused by clothes dryers.

Many of the fires result from lint that builds up inside the dryer vent chutes. Gors' mobile operation includes a van that carries vent-cleaning, repair and installation equipment.

"I'm looking to add two more vans as business ramps up," he said.

When it's open: Gors' services are available Monday through Saturday by appointment.

When it opened: September, 2006

HINTS FROM HELOISE - Getting the best from your dryer

Nov. 24, 2006

By HELOISE

Dear Readers:

Aren't clothes dryers wonderful? They make laundry day a lot easier.

Here are some helpful hints to get the best use from your dryer and save on your energy bill, too.

• Clean the dryer's lint screen after or before each load. This keeps the air flowing through the dryer.

• Dry full loads. Drying only a couple of things wastes money. But don't overload or stuff the dryer, either.

• If you are doing several loads of laundry, empty the dryer and add the next load right away so that the heated dryer is put to optimal use. Dry heavy items first, lighter ones last.

• Don't put wet clothes with partially dried items. And remove items as soon as they're dried to prevent wrinkling.

• Don't run your dryer when you're not home. There are thousands of home fires every year caused by dryers, many when someone left for just a minute. You don't want to take a chance.

Dryer vents a hazard, warns fire marshal

Last Updated: Wednesday, November 22, 2006 | 7:24 AM AT

CBC News

Louvred dryer vents are prone to sticking shut, causing a potential for fire, warns P.E.I. fire marshal Dave Blacquierre.

Blacquierre said some of the vents, with slats which close to keep cold air out when the dryer is not in use, can freeze up in cold weather.

"The temperature ordinarily achieved inside a dryer is normally anywhere from 130 degrees Fahrenheit to 150 (55 to 65 C)," said Blacquierre.

"If the dryer vent is stuck in the closed position that temperature can rise to as much as 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 C), too much for there not to be a fire to happen."

Blacquierre said if people have these vents they should either replace them immediately or ensure regular maintenance.

Great Dryer Vent Cleaning!
The following was sent to about 175 people by a satisfied customer:

"Okay, you are going to think I am crazy e-mailing you about your dryer – BUT – when we moved here over a year ago, I finally got a great set. Only when we used it, I noticed that after a few months I had to run it twice to get my loads dry. (I thought nothing of it b/c it seemed no matter where I lived, my dryers ran twice on heavy loads.) I just figured this is how it is with all dryers."

Well, the past few weeks, we have had to run our dryer even up to 4 times on a heavy load. There was even a "moldy" type smell in our towels. I called a dryer repair guy b/c I figured the heating element was going out. He told me that on dryers, if it is drying, even a little, it is more likely to be my dryer vent. He told me to hire someone to come and clean the vent that goes through the house.

I thought I could do it myself, so I went downstairs and pulled the vent out of the wall to find an extreme amount of build-up!!! It was damp and had that "moldy" smell that my towels have had. I tried to clean it out and the more I reached in the more clogged it was. I knew if it was clogged here, that the inside pipe had to be backed up.

I called a place called "Dryer Vent Wizard". It runs normally about $150 to come out, inspect and clean. That is for a normal 20 foot pipe. Ours ran 36 feet and was up and down and all around – causing our vent build-up. Even though it was over $150 for our case to clean it, let me tell you IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

After he cleaned it out filling a 5 gallon tub full of lint, I ran my dryer for a load and it dried PERFECTLY in a shorter amount if time. I have honestly NEVER had my clothes dry so fast. It seems like common sense that the vent needs to be cleaned, but thinking about it, this house was never cleaned in over 20 years and no other house I ever lived in was ever cleaned – so it was never my dryers, but probably my vents all along!!!

Anyway, they charge $39 to come out and take a look. (For a membership type thing of like $29 they will come out once a year and not charge the $39 fee.)

I HIGHLY recommend it!! Just thought I´d pass this along! We spend time and money on ‘big purchases’ like our oil changes, etc. – why not keep other important things maintained? Not to mention it is a huge fire hazard!

Ed Rauch
Since investing in DVW almost 3 years ago, I have seen my business expand consistently. There are two aspects of the Dryer Vent Wizard model that are really compelling to me. First, the amount of multi-family work we are doing grows monthly. I'm simply marketing our services to property managers and they are scheduling jobs that often exceed $5,000. The other compelling aspect of the DVW business that has been a pleasant surprise is the amount of free press that I have attracted. In the last year, I have been on the local network news four times. I love keeping people safe while saving them money.

Jim Buie
The thing I like best about DVW is that every morning knowing that I am helping to save lives while saving the environment. Many of my customers cut their dry time in half. My commercial customers have me back several times each year. I love the fact that our business promotes green living and cuts carbon emissions too. As a former volunteer fireman, I know that we are making a difference while making a living.
